Protective Packaging Tips for Products

Two people assembling product packaging, one holding a brown cardboard box, the other is tying a pink ribbon around it.

The right packaging can take an already great product and make it completely unforgettable. But no matter how great a package looks on the surface or how perfectly it reflects a brand, it won’t be effective if it doesn’t provide enough protection for the product inside.

In most cases, it’s more cost effective to pay for effective protective packaging upfront than it is to pay to replace damaged products later on. Taking steps to ensure products are well protected will also help improve something you just can’t put a price on: customer experience.

Every type of product is unique and making sure it reaches your audience safely comes with its own set of challenges. When choosing protective packaging, here are some of the key things you’ll need to consider.

Consider Your Audience

Different audiences are going to have varying needs and expectations for protective packaging. For example, plain and simple protective packaging can be great for many types of products, but a person receiving a luxury product would likely want something more. If they opened their package and saw an exclusive item surrounded by standard bubble wrap or foam packing peanuts, they would probably feel disappointed by the presentation. In a case like that, something like a cigar-style box with a customized foam or plastic insert could help protect the product while presenting it in a more stylish way.

Material Matters

Certain types of protective packaging are more durable than others, so it’s essential to choose a type of material that’s durable enough to support the product itself and still travel well. Corrugated is ideal for heavier items and fragile items that need extra support, while folding cartons are more lightweight and extremely versatile. If packages will need to be stacked, rigid boxes are made with a strong chipboard which is durable enough to resist being crushed by the weight of other boxes.

Shipping Costs

Regardless of what you’re shipping, the size and weight of a package will play a significant role in how much it costs to ship it. When choosing protective packaging for a product, you ideally want to find an option that’s pleasing to the eye and provides the protection you need without taking up more space than is necessary or adding excessive weight.

Think Green

In today’s world, lots of consumers are trying to lead more environmentally friendly lifestyles. When choosing protective packaging, look for options that are recyclable or made of recycled materials. Choosing eco-friendly packaging doesn’t necessarily mean sacrificing durability and strength.
