Product Packaging Trends to Expect in 2019
Before we know it, we’ll be saying goodbye to 2018 and ringing in 2019. As we’re thinking about some of the things that made 2018 an exciting year for us, we can’t help but look ahead to what 2019 has in store. A new year always means new trends and we’re looking ahead to what packaging design trends we’ll be seeing in 2019. Here are five trends we expect to be seeing a lot of in the new year:
Environmentally Friendly Packaging
More than ever before, consumers are looking for ways to lead more eco-friendly lifestyles and that includes the products they buy. Not only do many consumers want products that are manufactured through sustainable practices, they want products to be packaged with environmentally friendly materials. Plastic packaging in particular has come under scrutiny in recent years. Instead, consider packaging made of recyclable and biodegradable materials or packaging that can be repurposed.
Creative Shapes
Why be square? As consumers browse crowded store shelves, you only have a small amount of time to grab their attention. Bold colors and typography can certainly do the job, but the shape of a package can work, too. In 2019, we expect people to start looking into creating more unusual shapes for their product packaging as a way to stand out in the crowded marketplace.
Minimalist Design
While bold packaging designs can grab a person’s attention, sometimes less is more. Minimalist design has been a big packaging design trend for a while now and it looks like it will still be going strong into 2019. Simple packaging with minimal logos, graphic design, and wording can make a real statement. Fans of minimalist packaging design believe it helps pique the curiosity of consumers and lets the product stand for itself.
Transparent Packaging
People love being able to see what they’re buying, especially when it comes to food. When shopping for food products, approximately 30% of consumers tend to judge a product’s freshness by the way the product itself looks rather than its use-by date. Even outside of food packaging, we think transparent packaging is going to be big in the new year. If a fully transparent package isn’t ideal, another way to give people a peek inside is to use something like a custom folding carton with a cutout.
Limited Edition/Small Batch Packaging
Whether you’re selling a product directly to consumers or are reaching out to industry influencers, a memorable unboxing experience can make a big impact. Creating limited edition packaging with luxury packaging, turned edge boxes, or rigid boxes conveys the message that your product is something special and desirable.
